UMW Lecture

The United Methodist Women are hosting their second lecture Sunday, March 12 at 1 PM in the Fellowship Hall. Tim Hopkins taught history to local high school students, and has become an avid local historian in his retirement. We have heard two of his lectures, which he has also presented to the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Antique Society. Now he has a new lecture that was postponed by the pandemic. Tim is so excited to find new information about Davidsonville and Annapolis, and has even gone to search in the Maryland Archives. You will not want to miss this lecture. We will also serve light refreshments.

Captain Thomas Watkins, Civil War soldier from Davidsonville

“This talk is about Thomas Watkins, a local Davidsonville boy, who joins the Union army in 1861 at the beginning of the Civil War. The story is about his military career and how he was murdered in his home in Davidsonville 15 days before the war ended. The story also contains a lot of local Davidsonville and Anne Arundel County history during the time of the Civil War. Topics include: names of Davidsonville soldiers, where some are buried, slavery’s impact in Anne Arundel County, and even an example of brother against brother right here in Davidsonville. Finally, I will be talking about how this story was connected to my family.” - Tim Hopkins
